How to Use Network Device Interface (NDI) in Zoom App

The Zoom Rooms Network Device Interface (NDI) is an interface for video producers that allows them to produce customized visual experiences based on individual video streams. As soon as the webcast or meeting video is sent via NDI to the network, it can then be modified by production teams through NDI capable applications, after which the video can be sent back to the network. A producer can, for instance, add a custom name tag, a custom background, or a custom gallery view to any gallery, based on the tools available to them. As a result, it is possible to modify the video in real time and broadcast it to other audiences via a second meeting, social media, or any other form of live streaming that is available.

Prerequisites for using NDI

  • In order to edit Zoom Rooms, you must be an account owner, an admin, or a role with editing access
  • Version 5.7.0 or higher of Zoom Rooms Windows or Zoom Rooms Mac is required
  • Version 5.7.0 or higher of the Zoom Rooms Controller is required
  • Setup of the NDI protocol
  • NDI-compliant video production tool for video production

How to use NDI during a meeting or webinar

In order to use third-party video tools that support NDI, you need to configure your network for NDI and set up the third-party video tools.

  1. With Zoom Rooms, you can start a meeting or join a webinar.
  2. You can change the view of Zoom Rooms by tapping the Change View button on the controller.
  3. Under the Live on NDI® section, tap the Add Output button.
  4. You can choose Active Speaker or to display a particular screen share or you can also choose to display the video of the participant.
  5. It will be announced to all participants in the meeting or webinar that the session will be streamed to NDI via a notification that will appear on their screens. As soon as this notification appears on the Zoom Rooms controller, the host must tap on the controller to continue the session. There will be an option for participants to stay in the session or leave at any time.
  6. Make use of the tools provided by your third party video production company to create custom video streams that can be exported to secondary meetings, recordings, or live streams from the broadcast.
