Supported VDI software requirements in Zoom
In order for Zoom VDI to work correctly, it must be installed on a Windows-based operating system. This means at a minimum, Windows Server 2012 should be installed for server deployment.
When connected through RDP to a remote, non-VDI Windows 7 machine, users can offload Zoom media to the remote machine using the Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) plugin if both the client and AVD plug-in are installed. For example, a user could connect to their remote, non-VDI Windows 7 machine through RDP and offload Zoom media if the client and AVD plug-in are installed in the respective locations.
VDI minimum software requirements
Zoom’s VDI offering includes additional applications, versions and platforms that are known to be compatible. The list below exhibits all these applications and versions.
VDI Server
VDI Server | Minimum Version |
Citrix Server (DDC) | XenDesktop 7.6 |
VMware Horizon Server | Horizon 7 |
VDI Client
VDI Client | Minimum Version |
Citrix Desktop Agent | VDA 7.13 – 2003 or 2009 |
Citrix Receiver* | 4.9 Workspace 2003 |

Note: Workspace Receiver must be an official version of Citrix Workspace Receiver obtained from the Citrix website and is not to be obtained from the Microsoft Store.
Limitations for VDI features
Due to technical limitations related to the infrastructure and the requirements for media offloading, some Zoom features cannot be accessed with the VDI Client.
There are several limitations to the VDI Client:
- Local recording: VDI client does not support local recordings since most thin-client devices lack any writing space and Zoom’s continuous recording process only supports cloud recording. This is due to the lack of writing space on most thin-client devices and Zoom’s continuous recording process for local recordings.
- Virtual background: Thin clients may not be able to support virtual backgrounds in meetings due to system requirements. Optimized thin clients with sufficient processing power will be able to support virtual backgrounds.
- Dual monitor mode: VDI hardware however, is only capable of limited processing and dual monitor mode currently is not supported because of the demands that it places on the hardware.
- Gallery view with 49 participants: Depending on the hardware, Zoom VDI Client can support between 6 and 49 video streams. With the release of 5.9.6, support for up to 49 video streams has been added. In order to learn more about how to calculate the number of video streams for VDI Clients, please refer to the Support article.
- Group HD: It is not likely that VDI Clients will be able to handle Group HD video at 720p or 1080p resolution due to limitations caused by overly demanding hardware. However, Group HD video is possible if users are optimized and their local machines meet minimum requirements.
- Screen capturing: There are tools designed for saving screen content from third-party applications that may not be able to capture screen content from a Zoom meeting depending on where they are being used. There is no way to access the video overlay, which appears on the thin client where the virtual desktop application is located, so the video is unable to be accessed through any of the capture tools.
- The annotation feature can be enabled during your screen sharing session to record information during the meeting if it has been made available during the meeting. Click the Save button to save the screen share displayed on the control strip which can be accessed by selecting Annotations in the control strip.
- Local Sound Sharing: As a default, local sound sharing and audio streaming are not configured on VDI devices in versions prior to 5.9.0. It is possible to enable the feature in earlier releases by using the EnableShareAudioSound registry key. Starting with version 5.9.0, this feature has been enabled by default.
- Optimize video for screen sharing: When sharing from a virtual desktop, the VDI Client optimizes for screen sharing at low frames per second, thus maintaining server performance and preventing choppy animated content from being displayed.
- If you have enabled EnableOptimizeForVideo in the registry, you will be able to share at a higher frame rate if you have created the Optimize Video option. It is generally possible to share at up to 15 frames per second if you have created the option.
- Peer-to-peer connections: With the plug-in, the VDI Client will only ever connect to the cloud and cannot establish a peer-to-peer connection because of the optimized connection the plug-in is intended to provide.
