Mass-deploying with Group Policy Objects in Zoom App

In order to lock certain features and settings of Zoom, administrators can use an Active Directory Administrative Template or registry keys that will be installed during the deployment of the Zoom client. There is a setting that allows administrators to disable the ability for users to share screen or videos during meetings, no matter who is hosting the meeting.

Zoom settings and features may be configured by Active Directory administrators at any time through Group Policy. There is no need to have Zoom installed on the computer in order to configure these settings. You can download Zoom at a later date, and when you launch Zoom for the first time, the configurations you make will be applied. The settings apply either to the standard installer or to the MSI installation, regardless of the installation method used.

In addition to the Zoom desktop application, if you wish to deploy and configure Zoom Rooms as well, you can do so via command-line or Intune as well.

With Zoom Device Management, desktop clients can be enrolled in and managed centrally through the Zoom web portal. This lets you configure desktop clients and mobile apps remotely from a web browser.

It is strongly recommended that you update the Zoom Rooms client or Windows desktop client to the latest version if you want to ensure compatibility with the policies listed below.

The article explains the steps that can be followed in order to install Zoom on a Windows device, an Android device, an iOS device, and a macOS device. Additionally, Zoom has its own Device Management platform which enables you to centrally configure the mobile app settings as well as desktop client settings.

An overview of what is required to configure a GPO

  • Windows desktop client (either standard or IT Admin installer)
  • macOS desktop client
  • Zoom Rooms for PC

Note: You will need the latest version of Zoom installer to use some of the switches listed below.

Templates that are available for download

For each of the following versions of Zoom, the following download contains both the administrative templates and the registry files:

Note : You will get both .ADM files as well as .ADMX files in each download. As the policies will be bundled with the ADM files, they will be placed under the Classic Administrative Template sub-folder.

Configuration of Active Directory Administrative Templates

  1. Log on to your Active Directory server as an administrator.
  2. You can do it by choosing Start, Administrative Tools, then Active Directory Users and Computers.
  3. Choose the domain where the policy is to be applied and expand it.
  4. Select the domain where you would like to set the group policy from the right-click menu, click Properties, and then click Group Policy.
  5. In the Group Policy Manager, create a new object called Zoom.
  6. When you have selected the newly created Group Policy Object, click on Edit.
  7. Right click on Administrative Templates under Computer Configuration and select the option to Edit.
  8. You will then be able to choose whether or not to add or remove templates.
  9. You will need to go into the downloads section of this article and browse for the Administrative Template. Click on the Open button.
  10. After clicking on Close, you will be able to remove the Administrative Template.
  11. The option to enable Zoom should now appear under Computer configuration, then under Administrative Templates.
  12. The Zoom folder can be opened by double clicking on it to display a list of subfolders: General Settings, Chat Settings, and Meeting Settings.
  13. It is possible to view the settings for the individual subfolders by double-clicking on them and selecting them for more information and the ability to enable them or disable them.

**Important notes regarding AutoUpdate

There are no genuine auto-updates in versions prior to 5.8.6. The option AutoUpdate does not work. If the user selects this option, they will need to perform a manual update check and the desktop client will not automatically update itself to the latest client version. The EnableSilentAutoUpdate option, along with AlwaysCheckLatestVersion, allows you to enhance the AutoUpdate functionality in such a way that it achieves something closer to a true auto-update functionality.

On versions 5.8.6 and higher, you can switch between Fast and Slow release cadences to determine what is most suitable for your needs when it comes to automatic download and installation of updates. Using the SetUpdatingChannel option, you can configure the cadence of the updates you want to follow with AutoUpdate.

Note : The VDI Host Installer is an MSI file type that can use the same switches as the standard client MSI installer. It can be deployed through normal software and device management tools. The VDI Client will respond to the same MSI configuration as the non-VDI client and can be configured accordingly, except for the AutoUpdate switch.

Here are the options that you can select when configuring Zoom Rooms
